CHANDIGARH: The possibility of a mercy chance for Panjab University students got bleaker on Saturday after the committee set up to deal with the issue advised against it. The Syndicate has referred the matter to the Senate, which shall think it over on December 18.The committee took its decision after the Times of Chandigarh pointed out that a mercy chance was against the Panjab University calendar.
The development has pitted the varsity against striking honours school students.
Such chances have been demanded and awarded in the university in routine and mercy chance is one of the potent weapons for fighting student elections. But meritorious students have been opposed it saying that such mercy had brought a bad name in the job market. The committee, which has left the decision to the Syndicate and Senate, has asserted that it cannot make a favourable recommendation in view of court judgments where the university had taken a stand against the chance, quoting from the calendar.A resolution to give a mercy chance to LLB students was considered by the Syndicate in September and it was decided to take up cases of other streams also.In October a resolution to give a mercy chance to students of BA, BSC and BCom was again taken up by the Syndicate and a committee was formed to look into the matter. In the same meeting, Syndic Ashok Goel, who was asked to present the resolution earlier, quoted the cases of Rohit Bansal vs PU and Prince Bains vs PU. In both the university had taken a stand that mercy chance was against the calender.
